Girl Scouting is not just camping and cookies! Girl Scouts are involved in many more things than you can imagine! From rock climbing to competitive sports, from trips overseas to trips up the Mississippi River, from meeting the first female space shuttle pilot to meeting the mayor of a local city…Girl Scouts get to do it all! A Louis Harris poll shows that the two highest-rated benefits of being a Girl Scout are the opportunity to have fun and to work with friends on activities.

Below are more details about Girl Scout activities as they relate to our 4 program goals (Developing full potential, Relating to others, Developing values, and Contributing to the improvement of society):

Camp

Girl Scouts discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together! Camp is a magical place where girls have the opportunity to relate to others, both to girls and to counselors from around the world. Camp helps girls try new things, make great friends, and feel good about who they are. Most girls become different people while they are at camp, more outgoing, more accepting of differences, and more accepting of themselves.

Service Projects

Character, conduct, and community service are core qualities of Girl Scouting. And Girl Scouts are an important asset to the community. Girls plan and carry out service projects which will benefit a communities in new ways. Girls feel good knowing they are contributing to society. An important part of community service is educating communities about what the needs are and how they can be met. Service projects often make a lasting impression on the folks they are designed for. One great example is a Gold Award project in which a girl started a therapy program in a nursing home using a golden retriever named "Scout." This program is still going strong and the residents of the home look forward to the weekly visits!

Petals, Try-Its, Badges, Patches, and Charms

Girls earn Learning Petals, Try-Its, Badges, Interest Project patches, and STUDIO 2B Charms when they attend events, explore new ideas, help others, and complete projects. Personal growth is very important for girls to maintain. Girl Scouts helps girls keep growing strong by introducing them to new concepts and inspiring them to think beyond their own scope.

Cookies

Cookies aren't sold just for incentives! Girls learn valuable work ethics while they hock those tasty morsels. They set goals for themselves and do their very best to achieve those goals. They also devise a complete plan for how they can attain this goal, whether it involves making a list of businesses and people to visit or timing special events to maximize participation. In addition, girls can choose incentives to match their interests, such as using the proceeds to help fund a troop trip to someplace new.

Travel

Girls have many opportunities to travel the state, the country, and even the world in Girl Scouting. Troops take trips to new places where girls meet people who are different from themselves and learn to appreciate the differences in people. Most trips are to learning-friendly places, such as science museums and natural wonders like caves. Older girls in Girl Scouting can apply for Destinations, a program that gives girls a variety of new worlds to explore throughout America and the world.

Family Activities

Parents and parent figures often have limited time and opportunities to be with the girls in their lives these days. Girl Scouting makes it more possible to get everyone together with activities such as Family Camp, workshops to learn new things together, and field trips. Parents are always encouraged to participate in Girl Scout activities. Drivers are always needed, as well. Scheduling varies, allowing more parents to participate.

Adventure Activities

\Adventure is a word that usually perks a girl's ear up, and Girl Scouting has tons of it! Games & Initiatives, Teams Courses, High Ropes Courses, Orienteering, Caving, and Rock Climbing are all a part of the Adventures in Girl Scouting program. Girls not only learn to rely on one another for help and advice, but they also learn decision-making skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Girls learn to work together to achieve a goal, and it's fun!

Careers

Whether in business, sports, government, science, education, or the arts, Girl Scouts launch leaders in all fields. Girl Scouts introduces girls to exciting professions. With the help of many organizations, businesses, and female professionals, girls can find out what their dream job really involves. Those who don't know what field they want to go into can explore a wide range of careers to help them choose. In particular, girls are encouraged to explore fields that have been typically male-dominated until now, such as the sciences, as well as find out more about being an entrepreneur.

Training

We build leaders, one girl at a time! Older girls can start training to become Leaders and other volunteers in Girl Scouting before they graduate. Training is always open to adult Girl Scouts who are interested in knowing more about a particular subject or who plan to work with children. It can also be helpful to girls who are thinking about working with children in the future.

Crafts and Skills

From creating their own instruments to paddling down a river, learning sign language to performing science experiments, girls in Girl Scouting are constantly given the opportunity to learn new skills. What they learn goes far beyond the familiar arts & crafts realm. While they are exposed to new ideas and fun activities, they also learn new ways of thinking and communicating to get the job done. It is not rare to see older girls teaching younger girls all they have learned in Girl Scouting. They feel good about what they discover and want to share it with everyone they can!

Workshops

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, along with other organizations, often sponsor workshops in which girls can expand their knowledge of many subjects, such as photography, computers, drama, drug awareness, and fitness. Girls learn the importance of education and trying new things. As many volunteers and parents often participate, girls also learn that one is never too old to try something new, no matter how fun or simple it is! With girls learning alongside adults, education becomes an experience full of sharing ideas and planning to get results. Girls and adults have a lot to gain from listening to one another and working together.

Special Events

There's always something cool going on for girls, and we try to get the latest scoop on all activities in our council area, which is a BIG place! There are always great events going on right around the corner!  We know how important it is for girls to have a wide variety of activities to choose from, and we try our best to organize groups to take advantage of all Kentuckiana has to offer.

Fun

Of course, sometimes Girl Scouts do things just for the fun of it! After all, Girl Scouting is about Fun, Friendship, and the Power of Girls Together, and we aim to please! Girls learn while they are having fun, too. They just might not realize it!
