Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Facilities & Resources

Program & Learning Center

PLCLocated in Louisville, Kentucky, the Program & Learning Center also serves as the council office. The facility has several spacious meeting rooms, a fun girl room, a craft room, a climbing wall and bouldering wall, a stage room, and a troop house that sleeps up to 27. Also included are a full kitchen, showers, and air conditioning. For reservation information, contact Betty Krekel at the Council Office, 888-771-5170. No site manager on-site.

The Program and Learning Center has extended hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday until 8:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. If you are having a training or event during regular or extended hours, the reception desk will be staffed. If any meeting is scheduled outside of these hours, special arrangements must be made to have a staff person cover the reception desk. Please do not leave the front doors unlocked without a greeter. For your safety, you can keep the doors locked and use the bypass button to let someone in.

Climbing GirlClimbing Wall

The two-story double climbing wall is definitely the center of attention in the PLC. With a variety of holds on both the vertical wall and the slanted wall, girls ages 11 and up can try many different paths to reach the top.

Climbers are always harnessed while climbing on this wall. A trained belayer must always be present to insure that a climber does not fall.

Tuesday nights are climbing nights at the PLC! Every Tuesday evening 6:00-8:00 p.m., girls can come climb the wall for $5.00 each. To participate, just complete the Metro Event Registration Form and send it in with your payment at least one week in advance. View the full announcement for this program opportunity.

We need facilitators! Beginners welcome; we can teach you the basic technical skills. We need people who can encourage and work well with girls. Most of our programs are on Tuesday nights and Saturdays, so you'll need to be available at these times at least once a month. Consider attending a training, and after the training you'll be in our apprentice program. For more information, contact Jamie Baker, 502-636-0900 ext. 260 or 888-771-5170.

BoulderingBouldering Wall

In addition to the climbing wall, the PLC has a horizontal bouldering wall, where girls of all ages can practice their climbing skills in a safe environment.

There is no training necessary to use the bouldering wall. Climbers are not harnessed in any way. A large, 5.5" thick mat under the wall protects girls and adults from injury when falls occur. The wall is 10 feet tall and runs the length of the room.

To reserve the bouldering wall/climbing room, troops can complete a room reservation form. Troops can check on available dates by contacting Betty Krekel, 502-636-0900 ext. 266. There is a fee for this room. The room will be set up with the mat before the troop arrives.

Repair and Information Cards
In an attempt to respond faster to your identified maintenance and safety concerns on our properties, we have placed Repair and Information cards in all of the units. If you see a problem in the Program & Learning Center, write it down on the card. Place the completed card in the slot provided, or send it to Jed Johnson at the posted address. Thanks for helping the program staff better care for our facilities.

Area Activities

We also have an extensive list of fun opportunities.

Horseback Riding

We also have several approved horseback-riding facilities in our council, if your girls are interested. Just give us a call closer to your date at 888-771-5170 and leave a message for Linda Austin (laustin@kyanags.org). She can give you the most updated information based on who has renewed their insurance and chosen to continue providing program to Girl Scout groups.

Caving and Rock Climbing

Caving and rock climbing are also very popular in our council. Much of Kentucky is karst landscape, which means there are many cave systems running underneath the western and central part of the state. And recently, we celebrated the Lewis & Clark expedition with many activities, as Louisville and southern Indiana were major stopping points along their journey.

Derby Activities

Of course, Kentucky is known for its beautiful horses and everything related to horse racing (The Derby). Derby activities include the Pegasus Parade, in which older girls participate and make floats, and Daisy Derby, where Daisies dress up as jockeys and race stick horses. Churchill Downs, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is the most popular place for Derby activities and is known around the world. Therefore, Louisville attracts many people from different countries.

Bluegrass Music

Kentucky is also known for its Bluegrass Music Festival which happens each year and attracts many people from many places. Derby Pie, Hot Browns, Spoon Bread, Watermelon Pickles, Burgoo, and Dilly Beans (dilled green beans) are among the many Kentucky dishes enjoyed in the state.
