Patches Unique to the Kentuckiana Council
Kentuckiana Council Patch
All Ages
The beautifully embroidered patch represents Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. The bird, a cardinal, is the state bird of both Kentucky and Indiana, and the names of the two states form the name of our council. The five white flowers (daisies) represent our five service centers and the five levels of Girl Scouting. The flowers are also appropriate, symbolically, as Juliette Low’s (the founder of Girl Scouts) nickname, "Daisy." The goldenrod on the right side is the state flower of Kentucky, and it can be thought of as the "golden thread" that binds us together. Each of our council’s sections contains water sources that are important to all living creatures; and we live in lush, green, forested country with gently rolling hills. The two people in the patch represent our council’s diversity through differences in size, shape, and cultural backgrounds. Last, but not least, the setting is in the out-of-doors and is an announcement of our dedication to and appreciation for the world around us. This patch may be purchased by any registered Girl Scout through the Girl Scout Shop.
Camp Site Patches: Barren Ridge/Bear Creek/Houchens/Pennyroyal/Shantituck/
Stem/Twin Ridges/Whippoorwill
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana council has eight camps. Most of these camps have patches identifying them. In order to purchase one of the camp patches, you and your troop need only to have participated in a camping experience at that particular camp. The trail patches or segments can be purchased after you and your troop have hiked on that trail. Remember, Safety-Wise must be followed at all times! This patch may be purchased through the Girl Scout Shop.
Memory Keepers Interest Project Patch
Girl Scouts 11-17
Memory Keepers is an IPP about scrap booking, designed by Girl Scout Troop 825. Each girl
must complete seven activities and may choose from items such as making greeting cards; creating a scrap book or album commemorating a troop activity, council event, party, or
trip; comparing ways families of yesteryear preserved their history to today’s methods; working with a younger troop to familiarize them with scrapbooking; and visiting a scrap book store and interviewing the proprietor. IPPs are available at the Council Shop. The full requirements for this patch can be found on Resource Sheet #98.
I Love Bluegrass
Juniors
I Love Bluegrass was written by three girls from Troop 486 for their
Bronze Award. To earn this badge, girls are asked to complete activities such as learning about the state flower,
Kentucky’s motto, native history, famous Kentuckians, the Kentucky flag, and places to visit. I Love Bluegrass is available in the Council Shop. The requirements can be found on Resource Sheet #97.
Garden Club of Kentucky
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Girls can choose from different activities to complate this patch program, including planting a tree in their yard, making a container garden or a butterfly garden, working in a community garden, learning how to design flower arrangements with a local Garden Club, making a small arrangement to take to a nursing home, learning the techniques to dry fresh flowers, learning plants that are poisonous and which flowers are edible, and learning and identifying local invasive plants. Requirements can be found on Resource Sheet #92.
Adventures in Water
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors
This exciting and free patch was designed by the Louisville Water Company, and it teaches Girl Scouts that water is the building block for their community. The girls learn how water impacts everything we do and the role a water utility plays in their community. Booklets are available at the council office. For more information, contact the Metro Service Center at 502-636-0900 ext. 216 (Louisville) or 888-771-5170.
Cake Artist
Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Have fun with this program and use your creativity to be a Cake Artist! You have a variety of activities from which to choose. Set goals of what you hope to accomplish (we recommend following through with 5 activities), and when you have attained your goal, you are eligible to purchase a "Cake Artist" patch at the Girl Scout Council Shop. This patch was created by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, Lida Snow, and Kristin Lally (staff). See Resource Sheet #96 for the full requirements.
Lida Snow designs cakes for the Kid’s In The Kitchen section of "American Cake Decorating Magazine" and is the current President of ICES (International Cake Exploration Societe.) She founded Cake Artistry School of Sugar Arts, Inc., the first licensed cake decorating school in the state of Kentucky. Lida is a big supporter of having young people get involved in cake decorating and sugar arts. For six years she has promoted cake decorating by frequently offering "Icing on the Cake," a workshop designed just for Girl Scouts.
Domestic Violence Awareness
Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
This patch is a new Metro program designed to help Girl Scouts learn about domestic violence. The Metro Service Center has worked with the Center for Women and Families to develop this very worthwhile project. The goal is, through learning about domestic violence, incidences will be reduced or eliminated. A flyer with the patch program information is now available at your Service Unit meeting or at the Louisville Girl Scout office. This topic is considered a sensitive issue; therefore, parent permission is required for girl participation. For more information and a packet, contact the Metro Service Center at 502-636-0900 ext. 216 (Louisville) or 888-771-5170.
Double Jump Rope
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Earning the Double Jump Rope patch would be a good way for your girls to learn coordination and to get physically active. The requirements to earn the patch are on Resource Sheet #1, and Jump Rope Rhymes, Resource Sheet #4, is a good addition in helping the girls learn a rhythmic system while jumping. Another resource to assist in earning this patch is the jump ropes. Each service center has jump ropes available to checkout. Included in the packet of jump ropes is a booklet with warm-up and cool-down activities. It also includes information about "Double Dutch" rope jumping. All age levels can checkout the jump ropes from their service center.
Follow the Trail
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
This patch is a recognition of a well-organized troop with a variety of program. It is a tool for planning the year and is a troop program, not an individual one. Your troop will get registered on time, participate in programs areas such as out-of-doors, arts, science, people, and others. You will have troop ceremonies and participate in activities with other troops. If the troop has completed all of the requirements, each girl may receive the patch. As this program can be completed by a troop every year, repeater patches are available for girls who have previously received the patch (see Resource Sheet # 43 for requirements).
Jack Frost
Brownies/Juniors
This Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana patch program can be earned at a fun, winter camping activity. It’s purpose is to encourage Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts to appreciate the enjoyment of camping during the colder months of the year between November and March. See Resource Sheet #602 for the requirements.
Polar Bear
Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
The purpose of the Polar Bear patch is for experienced Junior, Cadette, and Senior Girl Scouts to gain the necessary skills to enjoy staying and living outdoors in semi-primitive surroundings during winter weather. They will research the methods for keeping food cold while camping without using electricity, how to handle hypothermia and frostbite, how to dress for the weather, and why proteins, carbohydrates, and fats are important in the winter diet. See Resource Sheet #601 for the requirements for this patch.
Reading Diva
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
This patch was developed to attempt to get more girls interested in reading. Younger girls will read with their parents, and as they get older, they advance to reading their own age-appropriate books. The number of books they must read to purchase a patch increases also. Girls may read as many books as they wish and purchase as many patch segments as they wish. Requirements for this patch are found on Resource Sheet #60, and patches are for sale in the council Girl Scout Shop.
Safe at Home Alone
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Knowing how to take care of yourself if you are home alone is important to your own well-being and your family’s peace of mind. The activities in this patch program can help girls learn about some of the many things they can do to feel safe and have fun at home. The program can be done by the girls individually with their parents or as a troop. See Resource Sheet #91 for the requirements for this patch.
T.A.G.S.
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
The T.A.G.S. (The Action Girl Scouts) program is a collaboration between Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana, Girl Scout Council of Licking Valley, and Girl Scouts -Wilderness Road Council. This partnership between the three Kentucky Girl Scout councils addresses the issues surrounding childhood obesity. The primary goal of T.A.G.S. is to foster interest in the importance of health, fitness, nutrition, and body image. The role of the leader/advisor is crucial in this process. It is not the leader’s job to be the expert who has all the answers, but, rather, it is that person’s role to provide girls with the opportunity, materials, and support for participating in this project. Contact the Girl Scout Shop for patch availability.
Wee Care
Daisies/Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
Wee Care is a collection program for the babies in our council's jurisdiction who are born to low-income families. The collection takes place during Valentines week to show our love for these babies. Girl Scouts collect baby items and deliver them to places that distribute them to these families. Check with your local service center to find out the details in your area. Patches and repeater patches are available from the Girl Scout Shop.
2006-2007 Memory Box and Senior Awareness Patch
Brownies/Juniors/Girl Scouts 11-17
A Memory Box is like a time capsule or a scrapbook. It is intended to preserve precious memories from the lives of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. It is specifically effective in helping individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease. It provides memory stimulation for those who are afflicted with the disease and it helps caregivers and family members, especially children, preserve the memories that are closest to their heart. To receive the patch, all participants must complete the such requirements as making a memory box to share with a relative or loved one, making an empty decorated memory box to donate, reading the storybook “The Memory Box,” or providing community service for senior citizens. See Resource Sheet #93 for the full requirements.
