The Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana’s High Ropes and Teams Courses are open to corporate, business, school, and other groups. We have a High Ropes Course at two of our camps: one at Camp Pennyroyal in Owensboro, Kentucky; and one at Camp Stem in Laconia, Indiana, an hour from Louisville. We have Teams Courses at both of the above camps, as well as at Camp Shantituck, twenty minutes from Louisville in Bullitt County.
Who can participate?
Courses are available not only to Girl Scouts, but also to youth groups, schools, individual adults, businesses, and corporate groups wishing to work towards achieving the following learning goals:
- To increase an individual's sense of confidence and self-esteem.
- To increase mutual support and cohesion within a group.
- To develop abilities that contribute to group-decision making and leadership.
- To foster appreciation and respect for differences existing within the group.
Safety
Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana has gone through great lengths to ensure all facilitators have taken required training to fulfill the requirements to become the teams course facilitator or high ropes programmer. Annual updates to keep skills and programming current are required of all facilitators and programmers. Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana follows the national standards of Project Adventure and (ACCT) Association of Challenge Course Technology.
The High Ropes Course
The High Ropes Course is similar to the Teams Course except 20 - 40 feet above the ground!
Being up in the trees, the perceived risk is high, but the actual risk is low. The participants that climb will be using harnesses, helmets, and ropes for safety. Some of the other participants might not want to go up, but they will be very busy on the ground in supporting roles of holding the ropes and encouraging. The High Ropes Course is rich with discoveries and develops a new level of self confidence. Emphasis is placed on:
- Building self-esteem through both physical and mental risk-taking activities
- Increase of mutual support within a group
- Appreciation of problem solving and understanding of consequences
- Recognition of one's own strengths and limitations, and gaining a better understanding of one's peers
The Teams Course
The Teams Course is a series of challenges built with wooden beams, cables, and ropes to create an obstacle. Teams explore risk-taking, leadership, communication, and problem solving in order to get through the obstacles. Each Teams Course obstacle is close to the ground and is appropriate for all ages and physical abilities. Emphasis is placed on:
- To build communication and cooperation in a non-judgmental setting
- To teach respect, trust, and diversity within a group
- To develop leadership skills
- To stimulate a creative, fun, and active environment
-
To teach the skills of shared responsibilities and respect for differences
